Specialty Workshops

Schedule: New classes are offered every month!
Tuition: Varies (see refund policy)
Class size: 14 students maximum
Class length: 3 hours

Specialty workshops give students an opportunity to explore a specific aspect of improvisational theatre. The new curriculum gives these workshops greater focus by breaking them into specific categories: games, music, stage craft, formats, and tools.

The short formatusually one or two class sessions allows students to complement other classes. They change often and fill quickly, so be sure to check the calendar once a month. Prerequisites vary for each specialty class; some are open to all and others are limited to students who have taken a certain level of classes.

Listening On and Off Stage #1027

This class explores the art of listening, both in our lives as improvisers and as off-stage civilians.  How can improvisers best “play” the role of a good listener?  How can we as people actually become great listeners?  Quality listening benefits both you and your performing partners, increasing the depth of your “Yes, and” improviser response.
The class will look at behaviors and techniques of good listeners, and will also examine the elusive skill of stage awareness what it means, and how one’s own stage awareness can be expanded.

Date: Thursday, April 10
Time: 7-10 pm (3 hours total)
Requirements: Foundation 2 and above
Coach: Cort Worthington
Tuition: $40

Former Sunday Player and BATS Belfry member Cort Worthington took a two year improv sabbatical to study leadership development and earn MBA degrees from UC Berkeley and Columbia.  He currently teaches classes in negotiation theory, and facilitates for an interpersonal dynamics leadership course at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, where improvisational principles are a key component. Cort claims he loves to listen.

Specialty Class Registration Policy

Please note that the cost of specialty classes includes a $10 non-refundable deposit. If you have registered for a class and decide you want to drop that class AT LEAST FOURTEEN DAYS BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS SESSION, you may choose to receive a refund check for the amount of the class minus your non-refundable deposit OR you may choose to reapply your payment IN FULL to another BATS class. If you decide to drop the class fewer than fourteen days before the start of the class (but more than three days before the start of the class), you lose the option of reapplying your payment in full.  You can either reapply your payment minus the deposit or receive a partial refund check.

If you decide to drop a class WITHIN THREE DAYS of the first class session, your payment is neither re-applicable nor refundable.  (Here’s why: While we want to be flexible with changing schedules, it is unlikely we’d be able to fill an extra spot in class at the last minute, so these rules are to ensure the success of the classes.)  For the same reasons, if you decide you don’t like the class halfway through, we cannot offer any partial or total refund or reapplication of payment.
